The Stahl House is an LA treasure. It's a mid-century architectural wonder built in 1960 -- using steel and glass. The house was designed by architect Pierre Koenig and made well-known by photographer Julius Shulman. This modernist beauty sits high up in the Hollywood Hills overlooking the mesmerizing City of Angels. Just below you can see Sunset Blvd. and the Chateau Marmont Hotel. This historic home belonged (and still does) the Stahl family home. It is a gorgeous location in Hollywood and yet modest in its simple design with spectacular panaromic views.
Enjoy some of the pics as we toured the house (there are public tours several times a year. Check their website for more info.
Thank you, Melissa Stahl, for one great tour.

Hope your summer is off to a kickass start! Mine is.
We're experiencing a heatwave here in lovely Los Angeles. Triple digit temperatures. The sidewalks feel like mini ovens and yet WGA and SAG-AFTRA members are out pounding the hot pavement with picket signs (some deserve writing awards on this creativity alone)... the strike lines got a lot better lookin' once the SAG actors showed up outside Warner Bros Studios in Burbank, California... apparently actors have way more time to workout, or at least that's what us writers like to say. We sit way too much writing scripts! Get up and jump into action.
It feels great to get outdoors, into the sunshine and high-90s temps to walk in support of labor and unions.
Here are a couple of pics I took on the front lines.

Mega talented, Academy Award winning actor Allison Janney (of I, Tonya and The West Wing fame) was there to walk/march/chant. CJ Cregg represents! Love her. Along with many familiar faces from TV and film. Stay strong, WGA and SAG-AFTRA! Together you can impact the lives of thousands by sticking to your principles and guaranteeing a better contract for all.

It was a perfect summer night for an outdoor movie. This gem of a drive-in is located in the back parking lot of the American Legion Post 43.

It's the first ever drive-in cinema in Hollywood. Only one of two U.S. drive-ins left that show movies in 35mm prints. For movie lovers, you have to check it out. The booth has DCI-compliant 4K
digital projection with advanced stereo FM sound transmission.

We were greeted by a pleasant young woman at the entrance. She took our snack order (it was part of the ticket price of $60 per car). It's a tad costly, but that covers everyone in the car. Each person gets one soda, popcorn (free & unlimited) and a box of candy. It's well-worth the price and especially for the experience. We loved it!

There is a new glass enclosed projection booth. You can watch how the movie gets projected and it's a cool thing to see, especially when a reel switches from one to the other during the film presentation.

This was an amazing movie-going experience! That name reminds me of the airlines or the famous tune Delta Dawn by Helen Reddy.

This Delta is contagious and spreading fast, namely due to human beings refusing to get vaccinated. There are many reasons for people not wanting the vaccination -- and I hear them out -- but for me, the science, the numbers, the math are proving vaccination works, as do masks in keeping people safe.

L.A. lifted its mask mandate for indoors in June, but after the July 4th holiday and folks having much-needed family gatherings and plane trips -- the numbers for infections are on the rise.

Masks are back.

I'm again wearing one at work.

It's, quite frankly, frustrating and infuriating.

During this latest public health crisis, I'm working on a new full-length play that takes place during WWII in America. I'm researching books and stories about that time in the United States, how Americans put country and service first (men, women and children) during wartime in the '40s. Every American found a way to serve -- selling war bonds, women working in empty factories when men left for war, children selling items to raise money for the soldiers.

What happened to that collective, self-sacrificing American spirit? Doing your best for others? Why, in this current American culture, is patriotism a word we don't recognize anymore.

There is a deep-seated anger in our country. It's worrisome. Even a national crisis like this horrific pandemic can't bring Americans together. Even the summer Olympics can't do it. Americans are now bickering about Simone Biles.

On to a lighter note, movie theaters are reopening across LA. I hope to return to the New Beverly -- Quentin Tarantino's theater. It's a great, small, well-run movie theater.

I haven't ventured to the commercial movie theaters just yet and probably won't any time soon.

A lot sure has happened since my last post.

Who cares about screenwriting or movies? The world has ended. Well, almost.

It's as if someone put a finger on a spinning globe. Just stopped us all cold. Life, as we know, seems over from coast to coast, continent to continent.

Just back in February, I attended an Oprah Winfrey live event here in Los Angeles with 14,000 in attendance at the Forum! The year was young and optimism was in the air! A new decade had begun. It was an all-day event of celebrating life and hope for 2020!

But then, the coronavirus invaded America. The crowds went away overnight. Events postponed, canceled, schools shut down, March Madness became a reality.

Now today, six weeks later, the US economy is still closed for business. Movie theaters in LA and around the world are dark. Film projectors are collecting dust. Box-office grosses no longer matter. Nobody is going to the movies anymore.

Except at home.

Disneyland is closed, for heaven's sake. Tomorrowland, folks, remains truly uncertain.

Sports arenas are empty. No crowds. No fans. The streets and freeways show nothing but empty lanes. No smog and wild animals are roaming freely where humans once roamed (I saw two coyotes in my residential neighborhood the other night!).

For once in LA, there is plenty of parking, everywhere! except there is nowhere to go as all the shops, clubs and restaurants are closed.

We can get fast food at the drive-thru or order in. Delivery men and women come to your door looking like they've scrubbed up for surgery -- mask, gloves, goggles. What in the world? They still didn't remember to put my salad dressing on the side... but I'm not complaining... ever again about take-out orders being messed up! Nowadays, we're just thankful to eat something besides tuna out of a can or pasta again!

Thank goodness for all the essential workers -- bless YOU all -- the doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers, school teachers, store clerks, package carriers, postal carriers, truck drivers, store clerks and stockers, moms and dads balancing child care and work duties at home, and to the news media (yes, it's still where we get updated information on this monster virus.)

And forgive me while I go a little Alanis Morissette on you, but isn't it ironic? We are now appreciating and seeing blue-collar, hourly workers (who may have been invisible before this pandemic) now being celebrated as everyday heroes. Those men and women who labor in the agriculture field to pick our fresh produce? Those undocumented human beings who work for pennies? They matter. Supermarket customers are suddenly being quite respectful to the local checkout cashier instead of berating her over some incidental mistake (like missing those savings of .10 cents on my Greek yogurt!). And the RAINBOW -- most identified with pride in the LGBTQ community for decades -- is now the UNIVERAL symbol for strength in numbers and hope. That was the point all along.

Is there a bright spot in all this craziness? Yes, the Internet. We can stream movies galore, download TV shows and series, watch vintage sports events, and Zoom each other silly. Social and video conferencing sites are keeping us connected with our families and reuniting TV and movie casts (the latest this week, The Goonies!)

Our screens are keeping us closer to each other. Again, ironic, huh? Weren't we all aiming for less screen time just a few months ago? And now kids are talking to their teachers on them.

We can't volunteer outside our homes to help society but we can donate. We can make a contribution to food pantries or small businesses.

Isn't it wonderful and inspiring also to see all these kick-ass, amazing artists (rock stars, Broadway divas, philharmonic superstars) offering free performances from their homes!). Hats off to Lady Gaga, Melissa Etheridge, Bruce Springsteen, and others.

It's so intimate and inspiring to see mega"stars" in their natural habitats (at home) with bed head and in casual clothes like the rest of us. It's Sunday every day of the week now. No need for dressing up, makeup or even showering if you don't want. Everybody is keeping it REAL -- including late-night comedians and theater folks. I'm grateful.

I'm wearing a mask at work, driving around LA, and running quick errands. It's hard to breathe as the Southern California temps rise. And it's hard to eat a snack, chew gum or take a sip of water without touching or lifting my mask. And there is something mysterious about having on a mask. Fashion statements (fancy scarves, sports logos, flags)... others wearing bandanas like Western bank robbers.

What about creativity during Coronavirus times? Do we abandon our ideas and just vegetate in front of our laptop or TV? Read for pleasure? Not write a word until it's all over?

I can't. I still feel the need to write, create, and hope.

I managed to bang out a new screenplay. It's a comedy (don't we need more laughs). It's called RITA RPM. It's about a middle-aged woman who takes up competitive cycling to overcome her empty nest syndrome. It's a Rocky-like story for those facing loneliness. Talk about perfect timing! We're all feeling lonely, disconnected, scared, angry, confined, and trapped nowadays.

But we will make it through together, we WILL. That's not just a slogan for the times.

This too shall pass, God-willing. It's a horrific time with mass deaths caused by this virus. My heart goes out to all those who have lost loved ones during the Covid-19 crisis. So deeply sorry, especially for those in my beloved hometown of New York City.

How can this happen in modern times with our modern-day medicine? How can the United States be the richest country in the world and yet so unprepared to fight this monster? What is this virus here to teach us? What is the ah-ha moment? That may sound like an Oprah-ism to you, but it's true. What will we learn from this unprecedented shutdown, shut-in, global crisis, and human tragedy? Will it force us to take inventory of our lives, reconnect with friends and family, let go of grudges and ill-will, create more, not take life, and leadership for granted? Will it teach us anything about ourselves? You and me? Are we better out in the world or being at home? Where are we making a bigger difference?

Yes, it's a dark, very bleak time in human history. For each of us. But one thing we can count on is the human spirit loves to thrive and rise over adversity -- we did it after WWII, we did it after 9/11, we will do it after this epic battle.

Meanwhile, let your VOICE be heard, whatever you have to say or need to say, do it now! Pick up the pen, the phone, a musical instrument or device and create like your life depends on it. Because maybe it does. Keep a journal (your grandkids will thank you, maybe history too). Take photos of the good and bad. Document living through this historic time of human struggle and economic devastation. Others will learn from your experience.

Before long, the world will once again spin again at full speed, and these isolating days with time on our hands will be over. What will we have to show for it? What will we have learned?

STAY SAFE and HEALTHY.

Until next time -- good health!

"Forget it, Jake, it's Chinatown."

That's one of the most memorable ending lines in Hollywood film history.

If you're a devotee of this classic movie CHINATOWN (Paramount Pictures, 1974), be sure to pick up this new book THE BIG GOODBYE: CHINATOWN and the Last Years of Hollywood by Sam Wasson.

The book has amazing details about Jack Nicholson, as private detective Jake Gittes, insights about 70s movies and insider stories about Hollywood's top directors, producers, and stars from that era of moviemaking.

I bought my copy already and had it signed by Sam Wasson at his recent talk at the Burbank Public Library in Burbank, CA.

Author Sam Wasson and AD/Producer Howard "Hawk" Koch, Jr.

The Big Goodbye focuses on the production and legend of the Los Angeles iconic film. The screenplay for Chinatown was written by Robert Towne. Wasson refers to it as the "the Tora of screenwriting". He explained why this came to be. When screenwriting guru Syd Field wrote his first book about the writing craft titled SCREENPLAY (1979) he chose Chinatown as the best example on how to professionally craft a script. The movie and the screenplay are still today referred to for its stellar storytelling on screen and on the page.

First assistant director on Chinatown, Howard "Hawk" Koch, Jr. joined Wasson to offer inside tales about Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, Roman Polanski, and others. I met Koch at the book signing for his recent memoir "Magic Time: My Life in Hollywood." Kock was the AD and producer of over sixty films. He produced some of my favorite films of all-time including "The Way We Were", "This Property is Condemned" (script by Francis Ford Coppola), and "Barefoot in the Park". He's worked with the best in the film industry and also served as former president of the Motion Picture Academy and the Producer's Guild.

In closing, I'll leave you with another well-known movie line from Chinatown spoked by the film's director Roman Polanski in his cameo as Man with a Knife:

"You're a nosy fella, kitty cat, huh?"

And then, Man with a Knife slices Jake Gittes' nose open with a knife.

Koch said that famous scene took twelve takes, with Polanski pretending again and again to slice Nickolson's nose open. Finally, after the twelfth take, Nicholson said: "That's enough." Koch noted the director used the first take in the movie.

Hollywood power games.

Until next time.

The Larry Edmunds Bookshop is well-known and one of the oldest bookshops around. It's been in business for over 70 years. When you enter the place, it looks like a used book store with shelves of old and new Hollywood-themed books, movie posters on the walls and other Hollywood artifacts. They have a great collection of movie scripts, everything from The Godfather to Forest Gump selling for $15. We can get most now online for free, but if you're into collecting film scripts in pristine condition, this is your place.

I, of course, had to find the screenwriting shelf and they had many of the well-known screenwriting paperbacks from Syd Field and other popular writing gurus. The store is rather small and some of it looked used more for storage. I expected it to have a more impressive screenwriting collection/display -- but it's still a cool place to visit when on Hollywood Blvd. in L.A.

Hopefully, this old-time bookshop will stick around in the digital world. Stop in if you're in town and pick up a book -- support the locals. You can browse and feel like you're stepping back in time in Hollywood.

The newly remodeled and recently reopened Formosa Cafe is legendary in West Hollywood. And for good reason.

In its heyday, the place served drinks to the best of old Hollywood -- Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, and John "The Duke" Wayne.

When you bellied up to this bar, you always knew who was sitting next to you. Movie stars. Famous singers. They came here to hide out from the movie studio execs down the block.

Just stepping into The Formosa Cafe you feel the presence of movie history (celeb photos line the walls), the allure of fame (and its demons) tempt you as you listen to bartenders mixing and shaking drinks. I had the popular Mai Tai that could knock your socks off... except people don't wear socks in L.A.

The 1933 Group did a great job in bringing The Formosa back to life. They poured $2.5 million dollars into its renovation. Thankfully they did, it's keeping the haunt going that first opened in the 1930s.

The bars (there are two) are huge, one in the front room and one in the back. There are gorgeous, red booths where you can enjoy Asian eats. David Kuo oversees the Chinese-American menu. We enjoyed the pot stickers and the beef and broccoli.

You can sit in the dining room, bar area, or in the remodeled Pacific Trolley car. It's an authentic trolley car now lined with celeb photos and newspaper clippings about the movie industry from days gone by. Bogart and Bacall often came here.

During the recent July L.A. earthquakes, a waiter said customers eating inside the trolley got a little impromptu ride. Fortunately, no damage or injuries, but it sure gave patrons a reason to order another drink.

I love The Formosa Cafe. It's not a tourist trap but instead is a cool, hideaway vibe. If you want to wow someone, meet them here for drinks and appetizers.

It's said that actor John Wayne once got so plastered at The Formosa that he passed out overnight in one of the red booths. They found him in the morning cooking eggs in the kitchen with a hangover. And, crooner Frank Sinatra is remembered as having a broken heart. He'd down drinks at The Formosa while pining over Ava Garner.

Ah, Hollywood.

Speaking of, last night was the premiere of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Quentin Tarantino's ninth stand-alone film. I hope to see it this week.

Until next time.
The other night I took in a very young Jane Fonda double-feature ("Cat Ballou" and "The Chase") at The New Beverly Cinema in L.A. It's not like summertime at a classic Drive-In, but pretty close.

The New Bev is a wonderful, cozy movie haven located on Beverly Blvd.

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino owns this establishment and selects many of the films projected. You can tell, his fingerprints are everywhere you look from European movie posters in the lobby to the great cinema selects each month.

All prints are shown in glorious 35mm (unless noted in 16mm), no digital projectors allowed. The famous writer/director wants you to experience movies the way they were meant to be seen. Many of these flicks are directly from Tarantino's private collection. I love it.

From the moment you get in line, (best to order your tix online), you know this experience is for movie geeks. No apologies made. If you come to The New Bev, you love cinema, pure and simple, all kinds of cinema. But, you can enjoy the place even if you only see a movie once in a while. But, chances are you are obsessed with cinema just like me. You can feed your celluloid addiction at The New Bev any day of the week, at all times of the day -- with kiddie matinees on weekends to midnight screenings.

Get your seat early at The New Bev

The theater itself was recently remodeled and is clean, with a great screen and sound system, comfy seats and cheap snacks (even vegan hot dogs). Hey, it's L.A. They could easily price gouge theatergoers here, but they don't. Admission prices are reasonable as are the cheap snack prices (visit the theater's link for specifics http://thenewbev.com).

Concessions

In the lobby, they sell T-shirts and you can see Tarantino's soon-to-be-released "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" movie poster on full display. The staff is friendly, welcoming and efficient. The place has a relaxed, cool vibe but expects reverence for all its showings (that means no texting or looking at your phone during the movie.)

Before each show, the film is introduced by a staff member offering inside tidbits about the making of the film. The night I attended manager Charlie introduced the Jane Fonda double-feature. (We also got to watch a grainy 70s trailer for Fonda's Academy Award-winning role in Klute).

Thanks, Quentin Tarantino, for making a personal investment in cinema, for putting your money where your mouth is. I'm hooked and will be back.

Cinema is about great directors, writers, actors, cinemaphotographers and music scores... but it's also about the theater experience itself. When that's done right, it's pure magic.

You can also listen to The New Bev's podcast The Pure Cinema. It has an interview with Tarantino all about his ninth film and programming for summertime at the movie house. It's a hoot!

Until next time.
Placing in the Save the Cat! Challenge holds special meaning for me.
I had the pleasure of meeting Save the Cat! creator Blake Snyder in New York City many years ago.

The Margaret Herrick Library dedicated to Motion Pictures

The Margaret Herrick Library is an amazing library and non-circulating resource center for movie lovers and scholars located in Beverly Hills, CA.

Today was my first visit to the library.

Who was Margaret Florence Herrick? She was the Executive Director of the Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences. The academy's library in 1971 was named the Margaret
Herrick Library in her honor.

The outside building looks more like a church than a library. Step inside and you're greeted by security (bring your ID). You are then required to sign in and present a picture ID, which they will hold until you leave the library.

I browsed the lobby which has photos of famous movie actors on the walls, everyone from Al Pacino to Douglas Fairbanks to Cher.

After signing in, you can proceed upstairs to the reading room and collections/resource area. Keep in mind that this isn't your usual public library -- here, you don't check out books or media materials to take home. It's simply for research on their site.

While there, I read two movie scripts (The Godfather II and This Property is Condemned), both scripts written by Francis Ford Coppola.

The staff is polite and very helpful. Follow all the rules (they are posted as you enter the building and upstairs in the collection area). Laptops are allowed (without covers), a pencil and paper are permitted (no pens) and you will be asked to store your purse, bags, etc. in a token locker.

The atmosphere is lovely.

That rare quiet place these days to read.

No cell phones are allowed inside the library area. That, too, goes in the locker. But in all honesty, it was a delight to be detached from my phone for a few hours.

There is parking nearby and metered parking on the street.

You can read books on every topic from directing to editing to screenwriting. The shelves are stacked with autobiographies and biographies, how-to guides about filmmaking and resource books.

I spent hours perusing their materials.

This elegant, generously-supported facility is devoted to the history and development
of the motion picture as an art form and an industry. Established in
1928 and now located in Beverly Hills, the library is open to the public
and used year-round by students, scholars, historians and industry
professionals.

I plan to return often. This library is a must-visit if you're a movie lover. It's a treasure especially for screenwriters.
Bridesmaids was a breakout hit at the box office eight years ago... and still holds up with some of the funniest moments ever on screen (it also helped launch Melissa McCarthy's movie career). It's a great movie featuring a strong cast of women. The food poisoning scene alone is worth watching this movie again.

Q AND A with writers Kristin Wigg and Annie Mumolo

You'll recall Wigg starred in Bridesmaids and Mumolo made a cameo appearance as the terrified airline passenger sitting beside her in the movie.

Both actresses, producers and comedians discussed their writing process -- which included Wigg flying out to L.A. every weekend to work on the collaboration, while still working on Saturday Night Live in the mid-2000s. Wigg would stay at Mumolo's Burbank, CA apartment weekends where they would work on the film's outline, early drafts and improv scenes.

They wrote a pile of drafts before arriving at the one that eventually became the film. It was their first screenplay. One of their biggest writing disappointments was when a big chunk of the Bridesmaids script got scrapped -- it originally had an elaborate Las Vegas sequence that producer Judd Apatow cut after several other hit comedies used Vegas as their backdrop (namely, the Hangover). Although Wigg said they were crushed to have to delete and reinvent something to replace the Vegas sequence, they brainstormed and came up with the "airplane sequence", where Wigg in an attempt to deal with her fear of flying, consumes pills and drinks scotch to disastrous (and hilarious) results -- ending with her and the other bridesmaids being taken off the plane by authorities.

Wigg and Mumolo noted they were surprised at their Oscar-nominated and box-office success since it was their first screenplay. They knew each other prior only from sketch and improv work in L.A.

Wigg and Mumolo are currently at work on a new project together due out this summer called āBarb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.ā Good news for us!
The news is heartbreaking. Another artist who made an important impact on our lives through his creative voice has died.

Like Luke Perry earlier this year, filmmaker John Singleton has passed away after suffering a stroke in Los Angeles.

I remember the young director when he first burst onto the filmmaking scene back with "Boyz N the Hood" in the 90s.

He, along with director Spike Lee, made movies that had a strong voice and unique visual style. The indie film couldn't be ignored by the masses. People took notice of its creator.

Singleton was (and still is) the youngest director ever nominated for a Best Director Oscar for his film (which he also wrote). He didn't win the Oscar that year for directing or for his original screenplay, but it sure put him on the map and gave him a platform to continue with his creative work for the rest of his life.

Having listened to many podcasts where Singleton was the guest, he always came across as humble and kind in an often selfish, harsh business.

With "Boyz N the Hood" he showed America another side of itself, one not usually shown in Hollywood movies. He introduced us to his world through the characters of three, male teenagers growing up in South Central L.A. It's a movie that is seared into our cinematic minds.

Rest in Peace, John Singleton, and thank you for writing and directing a film that touched so many lives. And for being an advocate for your fellow screenwriters and directors. You will be missed.
Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Malcolm in the Middle) stars as the raving mad journalist Howard Beale, based on Paddy Chayefsky's classic 1976 film NETWORK. Cranston delivers an intense, explosive, deeply philosophical performance that is timely (even though the play is set in the 1970s). Howard Beale wants you to get mad, to turn off your TVs (maybe your phones if it were today) and shout "I'm mad as hell and not going to take this anymore!". Fake news! Dirty politics! Americans who tune into the TV tube to get all their information! No wonder Howard's pissed off!!
I attended an early screening of the upcoming BBC America series KILLING EVE Season Two premiere episode tonight at the TV Academy in North Hollywood.

Don't worry. No spoilers here. If you liked the first season of KILLING EVE, you won't be disappointed with the second season. The show continues its intense killer pace with twists, turns, cringe-worthy violence, and dark, snarky humor. Isn't that why all tune in? And who does snark better than Sandra Oh?

After the screening, KILLING EVE stars Sandra Oh and Jodi Comer, as well as Executive Producer Sally Underwood Gentle, took part in a panel discussion before a packed audience of television industry professionals.

Co-stars Oh and Comer touched on their on-air chemistry and overall professional synergy in making the hit show. Comer noting that Sandra Oh is "so zen" on set and brings dedication and focus to scenes, helping the young actress to raise her game in the process. Oh noted how much she "trusts" working with Jodie Comer. They said shooting the show on locations in various countries is also fun.

KILLING EVE is thrilling to watch as we root for the spy to catch the assassin or the assassin to torment the spy. It's a delight watching these two strong, clever actors raise the bar for dramatic, action-based television.

Watch KILLING EVE season two on April 7th on AMC.

Post Update 4/8/2019: British writer Suzanne Heathcote takes over for Emerald Fennell as the Phoebe Waller-Bridge drama is renewed for Season 3 by BBC America/AMC.

In the morning, writers gathered at roundtables with industry pros Karen Kirkland, Adam Kolbrenner, Chuck Hayward, Jayme Lemons, Eric Tovell and Gesumino Rulli.

These intimate roundtables are always high in demand and fill up fast, so if you decide to attend AFF in LA next year -- sign up early! Some other folks chose to only attend the afternoon session (panel talks). Trust me, the roundtables are worth your time and extra $.

Some key takeaways from industry pros to writers:

-Have"stand out" writing.
-Have a unique voice.
-How does your life inform your writing? Personal insights will add authenticity to your work.
-Stick to your themes and brand yourself as a writer.
-Be social and get out there to meet people, other writers (this AFF event, for example.) Don't stay isolated writing in Starbucks with headphones on forever. Get out there!
-Less is more. Be cognizant of your page count. Don't overwrite. Revise.
-Build a community of writers (writer's groups, online connection, meets ups.)
-Be massively ACTIVE and never quit.
-Write consistently and not just when you feel like it. Consider it like a job.
-Write fast. Get drafts done. Set deadlines for yourself and KEEP them.
-Write with emotion on the page and tap into universal themes.

The afternoon panels were excellent. Topics: Finding The Time (To Write) and Overcoming Obstacles.
Panelist/writer Wendy Calhoun (writer for TV shows EMPIRE, JUSTIFIED and NASHVILLE) advised TV writers to be problem-solvers, have manners in the writer's room, be kind and friendly to EVERYONE in the room (don't be a brown-noser), know why YOU are at the writer's table.

Writer Carly Wray (Co-EP of the upcoming adaptation of WATCHMEN, formerly of Mad Men and Westworld) suggested writers never shoot down another writer's pitch without having something strong to replace it with and to remain collaborative. Be positive in offering your opinions to other writers and constructive. Calhoun added, "be the glue in the room". In other words, be a team player and be known as a fixer, not a disruptor.
Finally, there was a Networking Reception (writers love a good mixer!) Thanks to the Academy Education Program and Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting for the complimentary drinks and Mexican food. We networked and ate/drank in the lobby of the Linwood Dunn Theater, with Oscar literally towering over us. If that doesn't inspire you to finish your script, nothing will.
I love attending local events at my library here in Burbank, CA. The Buena Vista Library Branch often invites top authors and filmmakers to discuss their latest creative projects, sell and sign books, and meet with the community. Young students attended with their parents, getting school credit and meeting authors face to face.
The History of the Future book delves into the real-life story of a teenager named
Palmer Luckey, living and working in a camper trailer parked in his
parentsā driveway, and how he created a device that could deliver a high quality
immersive and affordable virtual reality experience to fellow gamers. Luckeyās revolutionary device, the Oculus Rift went on to enormous success.

Within two years, Facebook bought Luckey's company for over $2

I was sure to get my signed copy of The History of the Future. It was great to chat with Harris after. He lives in my old neighborhood in New York City (Astoria). Small world.
Summer officially ends tomorrow on the calendar. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the passing of the prolific playwright and screenwriter Neil Simon last month. Mr. Simon is the reason I wanted to become a writer -- I devoured his plays while in high school and watched all his movies on TV. Seeing "Barefoot in the Park" and "The Odd Couple" changed my life. Neil Simon showed me New York (my hometown) on the big screen. I loved his urban wit (his characters sounded a lot like my family members) and there is nothing like New York timing when telling a one-liner. I also liked the way Neil Simon described the writing life, it sounded pretty nice -- (I'm paraphrasing here) you get to work alone, on your own terms and play tennis in the middle of the day. Wow. Sounded good to me.

The first play I ever wrote, NetFits, was an homage to Mr. Simon's "Barefoot in the Park". I love every line in that play (his, that is). Thank you, Mr. Simon, for all the wonderful works you wrote and shared with us. Thanks for the laughs, sir.
The 2018 AT&T SHAPE tech and entertainment event recently took place in LA. Tickets sold out fast. I highly recommend this event, having attended it now two consecutive years. It's a fun time focusing on tech trends (blockchain, immersive entertainment, 5G) and entertainment breakouts (trends in storytelling, data marketing); it's a well-sponsored and organized two-day event held at the historic Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank.

Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles

There were exhibits and vendors featuring everything from smart phones to virtual reality to the latest gaming trends. Participants were able to stroll the Warner's lot (free guided VIP Warner Bros. Studio Tours also available). We toured sound stages for hit shows like ELLEN and THE BIG BANG THEORY, which was cool.

This event is also a great place to network if that's your thing. One filmmaker I met with had driven from Utah to LA just to network here. His goal was to connect with as many creatives as he could and also catch some of the top-notch speaker/panel events.

Some highlights were co-host/filmmaker Ava DuVernay discussing her early work as a filmmaker, to screening the AT&T Film Finals (short films) in front of a live audience.
Other highlights included a one-on-one interview with Sean Combs, Chairman and CEO of Combs Enterprises. Sean Combs discussed his early venture into hip hop music, a clothing line, to Revolt TV Network, his music-oriented digital cable television
network.

I was thoroughly impressed with Sean Combs. He spoke from the heart about his mother being his role model. She held four jobs when he was a boy. Sean also credits his mother for his strong work ethic that today has turned him into a multi-millionaire and successful entrepreneur.

The main takeaways from Combs' talk:
* Get busy.
* Know your purpose and it should have a greater good than just serving yourself. Help others.
* Always follow through on what you do. Go the extra mile to stand out and complete your projects.
* Learn your craft, whatever it is, be the best at it.
* Know and utilize social media to brand your voice or unique talent.
* Do what you can to get the information out to the world about what you're selling or creating.
* Take advantage of the doors opening during this "black renaissance" that's going on with the mega success of films like Black Panther and creatives like Issa Rae, Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan, and others.
* Be fearless.
* Keep God in your life.
* Join others with your goals and have power in unity.
* And his BIGGEST advice, OWN something you create! Or OWN your own business. There is power in ownership and Sean credited his strength in that belief.

Creatives Khadi Don and Issa Rae

Another inspiring (laugh-filled) panel featured actress/writer/web series creator Issa Rae. Issa joined interviewer/comedian/filmmaker Khadi Don for a chat. Issa Rae talked about her unusual path from web series creator (starting in college) up to her current success with her hit TV show INSECURE on HBO (Season 3 kicks off on August 12th).

Issa's advice to struggling artists is to "stay in your lane" and "don't compare yourself to your peers. " Her trajectory took time and had many setbacks before finding success. Issa suggested knowing your strong suits and to focus on those (your voice, your audience, your themes). Issa worked for other TV shows where it turned out not to be such a great fit. She feels optimistic about new opportunities for diverse creatives as many new doors are opening with a demand for original content.

Steven Bochco was my generation's Shonda Rhimes.

The multi-talented writer/producer had numerous hit network TV shows on the air in the 70s and 80s and was changing viewer's expectations about how we watched traditional television dramas. His shows often presented profanity, some nudity and oddball characters who had deep flaws.

You couldn't watch the Emmys back then without knowing Bochco would walk away with a slew of them -- which he often did for his shows like Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue.

Bochco changed the face of TV and impacted today's dramas (giving glory to realism and the anti-hero).
Days before hearing Bochco passed away, I caught an old Columbo episode on one of those nostalgic TV channels. The episode by chance was "Murder By the Book" and starred the actor Jack Cassidy (that's right, David's father). It was only the second episode of the detective series (1971). Great episode of cat and mouse between Cassidy and Peter Falk as Lt. Columbo... it wasn't until the credits rolled that I realized Steven Spielberg had directed it and Steven Bochco wrote it. It was Spielberg and Bochco's early days at Universal. Talk about nostalgia!
RIP, Mr. Bochco. You inspired me to be a better writer and to take risks on the page. And more importantly, I hear you were a very kind man to work with and to know. We salute you.

Until next time.
